Discretion was clearly not an attribute that anyone in his right senses would attach to Sary Snudden. But then David Stanville was not a young man remotely in possession of his senses. He knew that she was right to mock his inconsistency. Not even his love could blind him to the likelihood of her disgracing him at Hadderton, or elsewhere in society. But already he’d progressed beyond the point of no return. He’d take her home and introduce her to his parents – yes he would, in sight of all, in preparation for the day when they’d be wed!

‘And, by George, I’d like to see ye try it, boy!’ Cried Charlie Stanville on a timely visit to the Eastern County with his new wife and sister Octavia. ‘Hang it all, weren’t I the fellow who smuggled stolen beef into his tent in Flanders – and on the hoof, an’ wearing jack-boots to disguise the creature’s foot prints in the mud?

‘So now it’s to be our Sary posing as a tight-arsed virgin at your mother’s tea-board?’ Charlie slapped his own hard-muscled thigh. ‘I’faith I’d give a fortnight’s pay to see her carry that one off!’
